Have you ever had a word, phrase, or idea that repeatedly comes up?
Recently, my word has been hubris.
First, the definition of hubris from New Oxford American Dictionary:
hubris |ˈ(h)yo͞obris| noun
excessive pride or self-confidence
Pride and self-confidence are not bad. They are useful traits to have.
But excessive pride or excessive self-confidence can lead down roads that are better untravelled.
Who is deeming this “excess” pride, or “excess” self-confidence? Are you so self-aware that you can self-regulate your pride? Or is it being deemed by your peers? Your audience? The back seat armchair critics?
Collectively, the human population has agreed that there are certain instances of overindulgent displays of pride & self-confidence, for example:
Yet, your goal shouldn’t be to avoid hubris; your goal should be to know that it exists. Limiting your potential from the get-go doesn’t help anybody, just don’t let success get (too much) to your head.
